Teen Patti Rules: A Clear Guide to the Traditional Game

A clear guide to common Teen Patti rules, including the boot, dealing, blind and seen play, chaal, pack, show, sideshow, and rule variations.

Teen Patti Rules

Teen Patti rules are built around a three-card hand and a shared pot. Players receive three face-down cards and decide whether to continue betting or pack. The exact stake limits and some comparison rules vary by table, but the core structure is widely recognizable.

The Deck and Deal

Traditional Teen Patti commonly uses a standard 52-card deck without jokers. Each participating player receives three cards face down. The cards remain private unless the rules require a comparison.

The Boot

The starting contribution is commonly called the boot. Players contribute the agreed amount to establish the pot before the hand develops. Apps and organized tables may automate this step.

Blind and Seen Play

A blind player has not looked at their three cards. A seen player has viewed them. A blind player can normally choose to look later and then continues as seen. Betting requirements for blind and seen players depend on the particular table rules.

Chaal and Continuing the Hand

Chaal is a common term for continuing by placing the required stake. The amount must follow the current table limits. Because stake formulas differ among versions, the table's displayed minimum and maximum should be treated as authoritative.

Packing

A player who does not want to continue can pack, which is equivalent to folding. That player no longer competes for the current pot and does not recover previous stakes from the hand.

Show

A show is a comparison used to settle the hand when the applicable conditions are met. The remaining hands are ranked using the game's hand-ranking rules. Common categories, from high to low, are trail, pure sequence, sequence, color, pair and high card.

Sideshow

Some Teen Patti games allow a sideshow, a comparison between eligible players before the final show. Eligibility, whether the request can be refused, and the result of the comparison depend on the rule set. Do not assume sideshow works identically on every table.

Common Rule Variations

Teen Patti has many variants. Tables may change sequence ordering, use jokers or wild cards, introduce special hands, or alter betting and sideshow rules. These changes can materially affect play, so read the rules before joining a variant.

Basic Rule Checklist

  • Confirm the boot and stake limits.
  • Check whether you are playing blind or seen.
  • Know the table's hand-ranking order.
  • Check its ace-sequence rules.
  • Confirm whether sideshow is available and under what conditions.
  • Check any joker, wild-card or special-hand rules.

Responsible Gaming

If money is involved, decide your spending limit in advance and treat it as entertainment expenditure, not a way to make income. Do not chase losses or borrow to continue playing. Only participate where permitted and if you meet the applicable age requirement.
